Weights and Measures

Many goods are required to be sold with an indication of their quantity, by weight, volume or number.

Equipment used to weigh or measure goods to be sold or bought must comply with specific standards and be tested prior to use. Trading Standards operate a planned inspection programme which includes testing all weighing and measuring equipment used for trade within the city.

If you have bought goods which you think are less than the quantity stated please contact Citizens Advice consumer helpline - tel no. 08454 04 05 06.

If you are a business and require advice on Weights & Measures legislation please contact us as detailed below.

Any person operating public weighing or measuring equipment must have a certificate from the local authority's Chief Inspector of Weights & Measures. See factsheet.
