Major Emergencies & You

World events and the government will make sure that emergency planning stays a priority. This includes making sure that local authorities and emergency services are properly prepared to respond to an emergency and that there are measures in place to ensure 'business continuity.' This means that local businesses should be prepared for an emergency and they can carry on 'business as usual.'

In 2004 central Government delivered the 'Preparing for Emergencies' leaflet to every home.

To help you prepare for an emergency Southampton City Council have produced 'Major Emergencies and You,' a leaflet that can be got from libraries, council reception points, housing offices, universities and businesses in the city. You can download a copy using the links at the bottom of the page.

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Local Resilience Forum is made up of people who are responsible for emergency planning in Southampton, Portsmouth, Hampshire and Isle of Wight and the emergency services. The forum shares information and makes sure that should there be an emergency they are able to work together.

One part of the group's work is thinking about possible emergencies which could affect the county. They consider the risks and plan the most effective response. This work is part of the Community Risk Register. To view the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Community Risk Register and the Southampton City Council Community Risk Profile use the links on the right.

The SotonSafe Port of Southampton Off-site Reactor Emergency Plan explains the measures that are in place to deal with an Radiationaccident involving a nuclear powered submarine. You can read this document by selecting the ‘plans’ link on the left of this page.

The plan says we are legally responsible for making information publicly available at the right time through the press, other media, website and leaflet delivery in the immediate and surrounding areas.

You can find out about what we will do in the unlikely event of a radiation leak in the leaflet Radiation Emergency in the Port of Southampton.
