Mortgage rescue - Sarah's story

With repossessions set to rise this year, it’s important not to ignore the warning signs if you are struggling to meet your housing costs.
When Sarah Spalding 35 of Woolston, found she could no longer afford her mortgage, she was sure she was going to loose her home. But Sarah acted early and contacted her mortgage lender for advice. They advised her to contact the Council’s Homelessness department to see if we could help her. Following an assessment of Sarah’s personal circumstances she was in a good position to be considered for the Government Mortgage Rescue Scheme. The scheme helped Sarah by enabling a local Housing Association to purchase her house and allowing her to remain living there as a tenant. For Sarah this means she can remain in her home with her son and two dogs without having had to face the trauma of repossession. Sarah told us, “This service came at the right time before I lost everything. I’m just thankful I acted early enough to prevent it.”

A Council spokesperson
A council spokesperson said that the message here is to always act early by contacting your lender for advice. Whilst not all repossessions will be preventable there are a number of options for people to consider from their lender or from their local council.
