Empty homes

Empty-Properties (before)There are around 1,000 privately owned homes in Southampton that are unoccupied. We have an Empty Homes Officer who is able to advise and assist owners to bring empty homes back into use.

Contact: The Empty Homes Officer

Southampton

Tel: 023 8083 2346

What our service includes:

  • Advice on how to become a landlord using our Homeseekers and Lettings Service
  • Help and advice on how to apply for the reduced VAT rate of 5% on repairs, where a home has been vacant for 2 years or more
  • Advice on what to do if a home stays empty and causes such problems as anti social behaviour.

What our service does not include:

  • We can't advise about properties that have been left insecure, or where gardens are overgrown or harbouring pests. In these cases you need to use one of our 'Report It' forms to let us know.
  • We cannot advise people who are seeking to rent or buy an empty home. In this instance contact our General Housing Advice Service or see Housing in Southampton.
