Energy grants

There are several grants available in Southampton. These aim to help residents keep warm, and save money on heating bills.

Southampton City Council has set up a new discount scheme to help Southampton residents get the best possible deal. Visit our page about Cocoon, energy in the home for further information

Many other householders can get free or heavily subsidised cavity and loft insulation, part funded by the Government’s CERT insulation scheme. Call the Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre on 0800 512012 to arrange for insulation, or Cocoon can arrange this for you.

Who qualifies?

• residents who own their own home
• residents who rent from a private landlord.

Who qualifies for free insulation?

• residents (as above) who are over 70 years of age, or who are on certain benefits, the work will be carried out free.

To find out more call: 0800 512 012, or contact Cocoon on 0800 8048 777.

The other main grant available is Warm Front. This provides heating or insulation measures of up to £3,500, if you own your home, or rent it from a private landlord. This can be “topped up” by Southampton City Council if the work is likely to cost more than the amount of the Warm Front Grant. Residents of Southampton received over £1.5m worth of Warm Front Grants last year.

Please note: applications to this scheme are temporarily suspended until April 2011 at the earliest. There is not a waiting list you will need to contact them after April

Who qualifies for Warm Front?

You may qualify if:

• you are over 60
• you have a child under 16
• you are pregnant, and are in receipt of qualifying benefits
• you are in receipt of certain disability related benefits.

Telephone the Warm Front Team on 0800 316 6011.

Look out for information on the forthcoming “Green Deal” scheme which is currently in preparation. This will enable residents to spend up to £6,500 on energy improvements to their homes, and pay for the works out of the savings on energy costs that they will make. The City Council will publish details of this scheme as they become available.
