Report a Council property repair

Repairs and Improvements

It makes good sense to maintain your property. The council provide routine repairs to their properties and are engaged in a city wide scheme to upgrade council homes - called Decent Homes. If you are a private tenant or landlord there are opportunities for grants and advice about dealing with landlord/tenant disputes over repairs.

Repairs to a council property
The council will carry out a range of repairs on your council owned home. You can find out how to report a repair, which repairs are our responsibility and how quickly we will aim to complete them.

Decorating scheme for council tenants
Council tenants can have two rooms decorated. The council will provide a wide choice of gloss and emulsion paint colours from which the tenant can choose their colour schemes.

Who is responsible for repairs to my privately rented property?
Depending upon the type of tenancy you hold, your landlord will be responsible for major repairs to the property such as the walls, roof, external doors and windows.

Safety in Homes of Multiple Occupation
Your landlord is responsible for the safe maintenance of all gas and electricity supplies in your building and to ensure that reasonable standards of management are applied.

Grants for property repairs or Home Improvement Loans
There are two main grants available in Southampton. These aim to help residents keep warm, and save money on heating bills. Southampton City Council has a partnership with British Gas and their contractors, Miller Pattison, to provide insulation for residents at discounted prices, or even free.

Handy Person Scheme
The Handy Person Scheme is a partnership between Southampton City Council and The Society of St. James. It provides a free or low cost service to carry out minor repairs to homes for occupiers over 60, and certain other residents living within the city.

Information for disabled people
If you have a disability or long term illness we may be able to provide you with special equipment or adapt your home to help you live independently. If you own your own home, rent privately or live with family a grant may be available.
