Right to Buy and Leaseholder Services

Right to BuyRight to Buy is a government scheme that allows council tenants to purchase the property they rent from us. Tenants who are eligible will be able to buy their property at a lower price than the full market value.

If you are a secure tenant and have held a public sector tenancy for five years or more, you may be able to purchase the property you live in.

The Right to Buy scheme is open to most secure tenants with the exception of homes occupied in connection with their employment and housing specially provided for older people and (in certain cases) disabled people.

The discount is dependant on the valuation of the property and the length of your tenancy. The maximum discount is currently £38,000. A full guide to 'Your Right to Buy Your Home' is available on the Communities and Local Government website. A link to this website is at the bottom of this page.

Exercising your Right to Buy

If you are buying a house, you will purchase the freehold and will own the property outright.

If you are buying a flat or maisonette, you will purchase a long lease (125 years from the date the first property was sold in the block). This means the block will still be owned by us and we will be responsible for the upkeep of the building as a whole and any communal areas and facilities. You will then be charged the appropriate service charges every month.

If you are buying your flat or maisonette you will find the booklet 'Thinking of Buying a Council Flat' on the Communities and Local Government website. A link to this website is available at the bottom of this page.
