Council Tenancies - an introduction

Tenants handbook image

All new tenants of the council start as 'Introductory Tenancies'. After 12 months, provided that there are no problems or rent arrears, the tenancy converts to a ‘Secure Tenancy’. You first need to apply to be on the council list before you can become a tenant. Please contact your Local Housing Office or Gateway for further information.

Council Tenancies - existing

When you started your tenancy with Southampton City Council, you signed a tenancy agreement. This is an important document setting out your rights and responsibilities as a tenant, and what service you can expect from the council as your landlord. It is the legal contract between you and the council. As a tenant you must keep to the conditions of the tenancy as set out in the agreement. You are responsible for the conduct and behaviour of friends, relatives, any other people (including children) and pets living in or visiting your home, communal area or locality. It is important that you refer to your tenancy agreement for full details of your rights and responsibilities.

Change of Tenancy Name

When there is a need to change the name of the tenancy holder, the council can help guide you through this process and put the change in place. This includes assigning your tenancy to another person and succession in the event of the death of the tenancy holder. The service is available to all tenants of Southampton City Council and is provided on an individual basis, according to need.

Please contact your Local Housing Office for further information.
