Home insurance

Home contents insurance is available for both council tenants and leaseholders, it offers peace of mind should the unforeseen happen. Your possessions would be covered. There is also the option for accidental damage cover. Insurance cover is subject to the insurance company accepting your application. The service is available to all Southampton City council tenants and leaseholders.

Details of service

Are you aware that Southampton City Council offers a contents insurance scheme from Norwich Union (as June 1st - Norwich Union will be AVIVA), to both tenants and leaseholders? Some of our tenants still do not have any contents insurance or believe that the Council is responsible for insuring their belongings. This is not the case, every household is responsible for insuring their own possessions. Many of our tenants are now insuring their contents under the council run scheme. Our scheme allows you to spread the costs by paying for your insurance in weekly instalments, this can be paid at the same time as your council rent at your Local Housing Office.

The scheme includes:
• Fire, theft and flood.
• Accidental damage to TV’s, DVD players, video player, home computer equipment and satellite dishes.
• Replacement keys and locks for outside doors if your keys are lost or stolen.
• Tenants liability.

Better cover now available from 7 April 2008

Now includes:
• Increased cover for fridge and freezer contents.
• Increased cover for items in sheds and outbuildings.
• Increased cover for optional accidental damage cover.

All this for as little as 81p per week for the over 60’s and £1.22 per week for others, you can obtain real peace of mind and insure all of your personal possessions and contents through the scheme. We also offer Optional Accidental Damage cover for a small additional charge.
