Outer Shirley (SRB6)

In 1999 the central government gave Outer Shirley £15 million. The money was part of its Single Regeneration Budget (SRB) scheme and had to be used to:

  • Improve the education and skills of local people,

  • Increase the opportunities to take part in sport and leisure,

  • Improve access to healthcare.

The scheme ended in March 2007. We funded over a 100 projects with the money. We also brought a further £30 million into the area.

KEY PROJECTS

Weston Shore

On Weston Shore we opened up the shore line and updated the recreational facilities. We spent over one million pounds on this project.

Small grants

Small grant schemes to support local community groups were very popular. We gave grants to 120 different local groups. Sums ranged form £50 to £10,000.

Improvements to Mansel Park

We spent £220,000 to turn Mansel Park into a vibrant community park. Improvements include a new and better children’s play area and a boggy area to attract wildlife.

Sure-Start Centre (Pickles Coppice)

We made a contribution of £700,000 to the Sure-Start Centre. The centre was built in partnership with Southampton Primary Care Trust (PCT). The centre houses a range of community and health services for children and their families. It is now a Children’s Centre.

Mansel Park Pavilion (MP3)

The pavilion is home to the many local groups. These include:

  • Golden Ring Boxing Club,

  • Hampshire and Isle of Wight Youth Options, and

  • Millbrook Towers and District Community Association.

MP3 provides wide range of opportunities for local people to take part in sport and community activities
