Safe and Secure

Photograph of Southampton street.

Southampton is a safe place to live and visit - and is getting safer every year. The chances of you becoming a victim of violent crime are low and crimes such as mugging or assault are rare and account for only a small part of recorded crime. You can do your bit to make Southampton a safer city by protecting your home, your family and yourself.

The Southampton Save and Secure Scheme (a project overseen by the Blue Lamp Trust) can provide home visits and advice on fire safety and security. Bobby Scheme fitters will, by appointment, visit your home and provide advice and when required fit security devices and smoke alarms. Our aim is to reassure residents and at the same time make their properties safe and secure from fire and crime. Contact the schemeon 023 9289 9056 or email one.voice@southampton.gov.uk.

Tips for keeping safe

1. When you're out and about

• Keep to well-lit and busy streets as much as you can. It might be quicker to cut across the park or through an alley but it's not worth putting yourself in danger.

• Always stick to a route you know well, so there's less chance of getting lost.

• Try to look and act confident

• Spread your valuables around your body (e.g. keep your phone in your pocket, your house keys in your jacket).

2. At Home

• Keep front and back doors locked at all times. If you open the windows, keep them on the catch. Remember to close and lock them if you go out.

• When you go out at night, keep a light or a radio on, and close the curtains. This makes it look like someone is at home.

• Do not keep large amounts of money at home.

• Keep money and all important things away from windows. If there is a safe in your home, keep money and all important things in the safe.
