We know that family life can be complex and challenging and that parenting can be extremely demanding. Expectations are very high and parents are often the target of criticism. Having good parenting skills is essential to help guide your child to become a mature, contributing member of society - but parents tell us they find it hard to know when they are doing a good job.

We can't bring up your child for you - but we can help in times of trouble and provide advice, support and guidance.

Parents and children who have attended our parenting and family courses tell us that the most valuable lessons they learn from the programme are to try to stay calm, listen and support each other through bad times as well as good. For parents to be consistent and to remember to keep the balance between love and limits for their children.

If you would like more information of courses in your area please contact www.youngsouthampton.org and click on parents and carers.

Don’t forget for immediate support you can ring Family Lives 24 hour help line on 0808 800 2222.

If you are concerned about a child’s safety, please contact the Children First Team on 023 8083 3336 or email children.first@southampton.gov.uk.
