We want you to have the best information and advice available. The person checking your form is not able to give you advice on nationality matters. The Nationality Checking Service helpdesk is available to help. A link to their website is at the bottom of this page, or you can call them on 0845 010 5200.

5. Does the checking service speed up my application?

Whilst your application is not given priority over any other received, you will be able to leave our offices knowing that every part of the application and your documentation has been checked and completed.

Forms and documentation that has been checked completely, are generally processed more quickly because there is no need for the Home Office to request missing or incomplete information.

6. When does the qualifying period start?

The residential qualifying period is calculated from the day the Home Office receive your application. Most unsuccessful applications fail because the applicant was not present in the UK at the beginning of the residential qualifying period.
It is your responsibility to make sure you meet this requirement before you book an appointment with this office.

For example, (for a 5 year qualifying period) if the appointment date is 25 March 2012 you must show that you were in the UK on 27 March 2007 as this is the date the Home Office receives your application. If your qualifying period is to cover three years, you must show that you were in the UK on 27 March 2009.

7. Do you offer the Settlement Checking Service?

We do not offer the Settlement Checking Service in this office. You can follow the link to the Home Office website for the office's that do offer the service.

8. Where can I take my life in the UK test?

The Life in the UK test website gives you more information about how to book an appointment and where your local test centre is.

9. Can I Laminate my Naturalisation Certificate?

"Your certificate of Naturalisation is a very important document and should be stored safely and securely by you"

The Home Office has issued the following statement:

"Please note that you are responsible for the certificate of naturalisation and that it should not be laminated in any circumstances and, if it is, you will incur a cost for a replacement if the Identity and Passport Service reject a laminated certificate. Individuals who wish to request a duplicate certificate should contact the Nationality Call Desk on 0845 010 5200"
