Population

Welcome to the Southampton City Council population pages.

The last real population count took place in the 2001 census and the next will be from the 2011 Census, the results are due next year. Between the censuses there is no actual population counts. The Office for National Statistics and Hampshire County Council produce estimates that give a ‘best guess’ at the current population levels of Southampton.

The links below give four different population estimates and give an explanation of which situation each one would be most useful in:

Mid Year Population Estimates: These estimates are produced by the Office for National Statistics and provide comparable statistics across the whole country for a single year. The current estimate is for 2010.

Subnational Population Projections: These projections run from 2010 to 2035 and are produced by the Office for National statistics for the whole country.

Small Area Population Statistics: These estimates are produced by Hampshire County Council and run from 2010 to 2017 and are based on local conditions and housing stock.

Long term population projections: These projections are produced by Hampshire County Council and run from 2001 to 2026. This data is a 'what if' based on local information and conditions.

Births, deaths and migration: Hampshire County Council has produced a series of reports on birth and death trends across the county and have also a poduced a report on recent trends in international in-migration into Hampshire.
