Firstly, more than 237, nearly 70% of local authorities have
already introduced AWC. These include large cities such as
Newcastle, Reading and Sheffield, with cities such as Plymouth,
Coventry and Bournemouth starting alternate weekly collections
(AWC) in the next six months or so. AWC is a tried and tested way
of collecting household waste and works in cities that also have
high population densities along with HMOs and large families. What
will be important is working with you to ensure a smooth
implementation.
The Council is intending to provide the following support to help
residents manage their waste:
• To review requests for additional container capacity based
on the needs of the household. The number of people living in the
house, number of young children in nappies and medical conditions
that generate waste will be taken into account. Residents must in
the first instance, be using all recycling containers, segregate
their waste and put the right materials in the correct bins.
• Investment in a reactive vehicle/crew along with additional support for cleansing and education/enforcement to make sure waste and flytipping is not left on the highway will take place. Enforcement action will be undertaken to improve the quality of recycling collected and prevent bins being left on the pavement. However, due to legislation requirements, this will take time and is not a quick fix.
• We want to work with community groups to undertake door knocking and support residents with any issues they might have with their waste and recycling. A programme of roadshows across the city is being put together.
It is important to remember that the management of waste and
recycling is a two way process – residents need to manage and
dispose of their waste correctly, by putting the right items in the
right container and the Council needs to ensure waste and recycling
is collected and streets are left clean and tidy and provide help
and support for residents.
Together we can make sure Southampton is great at recycling and is
a clean and tidy city for everyone to live in.
