Save Council owned care homes: Glen Lee and Holcroft House

We the undersigned petition the council to abandon its proposals to close the last two council owned residential care homes: Glen Lee and Holcroft House, and place up to 85 loyal care staff at risk of redundancy.

Residents at the council’s care homes require secure residential care based on their needs assessments. Expecting residents to live at home or move to extra care housing is a risk to their safety and lives and relocating residents is likely to irreversibly impact on their dementia or other health conditions.

We urge Southampton City Council to look again at the financial figures it has based its proposals on and compare the equivalent care packages (including the amount of contact time between carers and residents) provided by the council and the private care providers to ensure the accuracy of cost comparisons.

We ask Southampton City Council to give these essential services to the most vulnerable people in our city adequate opportunity to remove any perceived inefficiency and to work towards achieving a balanced budget. We would like senior council officers, to explain to elected members and the public what measures taken to avoid the closure and what has been done to support the management and workers at both homes to manage financial spend and income.

We also ask the council to re-affirm its commitment to and enforce UNISON’s Residential and Ethical Care Charters when commissioning care services. These charters were signed in May 2018 and are designed to ensure a baseline for the safety, quality and dignity of care for residents and clients by ensuring employment conditions for workers.
