wind energy and a greener future

We the undersigned petition the council to Provide a greener future to the city as given the rise in carbon emissions in the city and lack of commitment from the council to provide wind energy to the city.

We are a coastal city who has a major shipping commitment to the world and country which has a an environmental impact on the city and given the lack of commitment from the council to the environmental issues it about time the people have a say. We have plenty of wind here so given the council has given the green light for wind turbine manufacturing in the area how about install some within the waterways or on land with the city boundaries.

Council response

Southampton City Council launched its Green City Charter in 2019, as part of this we have commitment for our own assets to be carbon neutral by 2030. We intend to lead by example and want city stakeholders to join us reach this goal.

Our Green City Plan will be presented to Cabinet on the 11th February and amongst the activities we are committed to utilising our own assets and investing in local renewable energy. There are various options available including solar, geothermal and wind. All will require careful consideration to ensure they will be effective but we expect to see the first projects relating to this commitment to be delivered from 2020.

We recognise that our duties and resources are limited and we will need the support of other stakeholders in the city to deliver the scale of change needed to address the challenges of climate changeto deliver a carbon neutral city. Similarly we are in a position to assist and influence key stakeholders and organisations across the city. This is a common strand throughout our Green City Plan. More specifically we propose to will produce a City Carbon Reduction and Energy Strategy in the next 24 months that will help to inform, guide and direct us, partners and stakeholders on the best way to deliver and maximise local renewable energy opportunities.
