Southampton is a film friendly city.
Southampton City Council is keen to encourage film and television companies to film in the city and will provide help and assistance where possible.
The city's Events Team understands the needs of location managers and provides a one stop service for film and TV, Video and DVD’s and Commercials and photo shoots and aim to make your experience of filming in the city an easy one.

Some Southampton locations that you are interested in using may belong to the Council, part of the highway or even privately owned. The Events Team can advise on suitable locations, liaise with location contacts and other Council departments on your behalf to assist in the smooth organisation of your shoot.

The Process
In the first instance contact the Event Management Team by email filming@southampton.gov.uk or alternatively call 023 8083 2755. The team can advise you regarding suitable locations if you haven't already got some in mind and also inform you of any other filming project or major event taking place in the city on your proposed dates.

You will need to complete and submit an application form with the summary of the film project, proposed date/s of filming, proposed location/s, number of crew and equipment etc. Depending on the nature and size of the filming project, the Events Team will liaise on your behalf with relevant members of Southampton’s Safety Advisory Group - which include representatives from Southampton City Council and Hampshire Constabulary who may impose additional conditions to ensure that the proposed shoot is safe and carried out with the minimum of inconvenience. You will also need to submit a risk assessment specifically for your filming and a copy of your Public Liability Insurance cover.

A fee may be charged for filming in Southampton to cover administration time and the use of council premises or land. Due to the variable nature of filming requests The Council does not operate a set tariff of film charges as no two film projects are the same and so every production charge will be calculated on an individual basis. All charges will be discussed with you at the point of application along with any other recovery costs e.g. hire of a venue/premises, road closures or suspension of parking bays etc.

Please take time to read the general terms and conditions for filming in the city and the Hampshire Film Guidelines and Code of Practice
