Southampton gets a new mayor

The Sheriff of SouthamptonThe new Mayor of Southampton was elected today (Wednesday 16 May) at the city's annual Mayor Making ceremony at the Guildhall. The new Mayor of Southampton is Cllr Derek Burke. The Mayor's chosen charities for the next year are Two Saints, a charity which supports homeless and vulnerable people, and Headway, the brain injury charity.

Mayor of SouthamptonThe outgoing Mayor of Southampton is Mr Terry Matthews. Mr Matthews became the 789th Mayor of Southampton on 18 May 2011 following his term as Sheriff the previous year. His chosen charities were Alzheimer's Research UK and Gift of Sight Appeal.

Cllr Ivan White was appointed as the new Sheriff of the City.

The Mayor Making ceremony will be followed by the council’s Annual General Meeting when the council will elect a new leader who will then appoint a cabinet. The AGM takes place from 2pm in the Council Chamber.
