Landmark £50m waterfront scheme gets planning approval
23/04/2012

Planning has been approved for a landmark £50m waterfront scheme at Ocean Village in Southampton.

Southampton City Council planners approved MDL Marinas` visually stunning `super-yacht` inspired hotel with its proposed Michelin starred restaurant and a rooftop champagne bar. Phase two of the scheme will include three apartment buildings up to ten storeys providing 82 flats and a mix of restaurants, shops and offices.

Dawn Baxendale, Director of Economic Development, said: "This is excellent news for Southampton and I congratulate MDL Marinas for getting their planning. The £50m scheme will bring hundreds of new jobs and demonstrates that serious investors believe Southampton represents their future and is a city that is becoming comparable with the best in Europe.”

Eamonn Feeney, Managing Director of MDL Marinas Group, commented: “We are delighted with today’s decision which will enable us to deliver the final stage of the master plan for Ocean Village Marina, and most importantly create a vibrant waterfront destination for the city.”

Chairman of Nicolas James Group, Nicolas Roach, added: “Southampton city lacks a five star hotel product. We intend to bring a luxury waterfront Hotel and Spa to the city, along with our award winning Jetty restaurant concept.”

MDL Marinas teamed up with Harbour Hotels to enable this project. The ground floor of the hotel will include a large open plan lounge, restaurant and bar which will extend out onto a terrace at the end of the existing promontory. Set to be a welcome addition to the city, the hotel will have a number of flexible function rooms and is set to be a popular attraction.

Tenders for the construction are due within weeks, with work commencing as soon as possible.

In addition to the UK sites, MDL also has two first-class marinas in the MDL Mediterranean network, one in Spain (Sant Carles in Catalonia) and one in Italy (Marina dei Cesari in Fano).
