Essential works to Itchen Bridge
Itchen Bridge is about to undergo essential maintenance work to replace eight expansion joints. The work is being carried out by Balfour Beatty Living Places between Monday 8 February and Friday 18 March 2016 over 16 nights, working Sunday to Thursday from 8pm to 6am. The exact timing and dates will be weather dependant and displayed on advance warning signs closer to the time.
To achieve this these essential repairs will be carried out overnight to avoid the significant impact of day time closures on the city’s road network. We are also planning works to minimise the impact on local residents.
The work will be completed in stages overnight when the least number of people use the bridge and when the alternative diversion routes are not busy. To reduce the disruption further some initial work on each joint can be carried out under temporary traffic signals from 8pm to 11pm, allowing the bridge to continue to operate.
From 11pm to 6am the bridge will need to be fully closed to install the expansion joints. An overnight diversion route will be signposted via Peartree Avenue, Bitterne Road West and Northam Bridge. Work will be noisy at times but as much as possible the noisiest work will be carried out earlier into each closure. The location of the work will change each night as the joints are located across the length of the bridges. The work will be completed as quickly and safely as possible.
In addition there are some daytime inspections and repairs being carried out underneath the section of Itchen Bridge that spans Bridge Road, known as Vicarage Bridge. Scaffolding will be up until mid to late February.
