Travel advice as major work is carried out to replace bridge
As Highways England prepares to close a section of the M27 to replace the bridge which carries the A3057 Romsey Road over the motorway, Southampton City Council and Hampshire County Council are urging residents to leave more time for their journeys and expect extra traffic in the area.
The M27 east and westbound carriageways will be closed between junctions 3 and 5 from 10pm on Friday 28 June through to 5am on Monday 1 July. Signed diversions will be in place via Southampton, Chilworth, North Baddesley and Romsey.
There will also be five cruise ships docked in Southampton on Saturday which we expect to have additional impact on travel into the city centre.
Full information on the scheme is available from the Highways England website.
We will be doing everything that we can in Southampton to minimise the impact of the Highways England closure of the M27.
- There will be no roadworks on the diversion route.
- Recovery crews will be on standby should any vehicles break down on the diversion route
- Our city CCTV control room will be monitoring traffic flows throughout the city and providing updates via @scchighways
- Where possible we will be adjusting traffic signals to improve traffic flows
We expect all routes into and around Southampton to be very busy this weekend. If you’re travelling to or around the city please make sure you allow plenty of extra time for your journey and consider public transport, walking or cycling where possible.
You can use our My Journey travel planner to get ahead of the game and map out your journey ahead of time.
Hot weather advice
This weekend is set to be a scorcher. If you are travelling by car remember to take some extra water for your journey as we expect all routes to be busy.
