A birth must be registered within 42 days to obtain a birth certificate for your baby. If your baby was born at the Princess Anne Hospital or at a home within the Southampton City Council area you can book your appointment at Southampton Register Office.
If your baby was born at the New Forest Birth Centre, Ashurst, please make your appointment with the Hampshire Registration Service.
Selected offices in Hampshire Registration district are also able to register births that took place at the Princess Anne Hospital or home births within the Southampton city council area. If you can't register a birth in the area where the baby was born, you can go to another Register Office in England or Wales where you can register by declaration and the birth certificate will be sent from the correct office in due course.
More information about what you need to register a birth is available on GOV.UK. Although you must attend in person, you do not need to bring the baby with you.
It does not cost anything to register a baby’s birth. At the registration you will be given a short birth certificate free of charge. This certificate is suitable for your child benefit application.
A full birth certificate contains all the information that appears in the register entry and is the certificate you will require to obtain a passport or to open any bank accounts for your child. These certificates are available to purchase at the time of registration at a cost of £4.00 each. You are able to order a certificate any time after the registration but the cost will be more.
How long is my appointment?
A birth registration appointment lasts about 20 minutes. If more than one baby is being registered, or an interpreter is assisting, it may take up to 40 minutes.
Now you have registered your baby's birth you may like to arrange a Naming ceremony.
