Details of service:
In order to assist Southampton businesses to operate in compliance with health and safety legislation, and without causing ill health to employees and others, we operate a planned and prioritised inspection programme based on risk and we work in accordance with the Health and Safety Enforcement Policy. We also promote health and safety through education, guidance and partnerships with employers and intermediaries. We investigate certain accidents, illnesses and near misses which have arisen due to work activities, and we also respond to complaints about unsafe practices.
What Will Inspetors Do?
Inspectors will assess how businesses manage risks to their employees and others who may be affected by what they do. We will concentrate on those things which are most likely to kill, injure and make people ill (priority topics) as a means of finding out how all health and safety is managed. The priority topics are:
- Falls from height
- Workplace transport
- Musculoskeletal disorders
- Slips and trips
- Stress
What Should Businesses Do?
You should consider all aspects of your activities to see what can cause harm and how harm can be avoided. This is the basis behind the legal duty to carry out a risk assessment. Consider in particular each of the 5 priority topics and involve safety representatives and/or employees in the risk assessment.
