What is a CREW?

We have a track record of working successfully, in partnership, with a variety of organisations. CREWs were developed as part of the city’s Anti-Social Behaviour Strategy.

Every two months, council teams and partner groups pay a surprise visit to an area for a week, working together to kick-start general improvement and a reduction in crime levels in the area. We get fast and obvious results.

What happens during a CREW?

We get together with various council teams and our partners to plan operations for the week to make sure we get the best results.

Every CREW is different; we make sure we meet the needs of that neighbourhood. Every CREW has great results. We have seen that improvements to the area are kept up for a long time afterwards.

Among many others, those involved include:

• Anti-social behaviour team (including City Patrol)
• Local businesses
• City cleansing
• Community organisations
• DVLA
• Environmental health
• Hampshire fire and rescue
• Housing
• Junior neighbourhood wardens
• Neighbourhood partnerships
• Neighbourhood wardens
• Parks and open spaces.
• Police
• Schools
• Sports development
• Trading standards
• Voluntary organisations

As well as dealing with crime and making the area look better, sports and play activities are arranged for young people, and we encourage everyone to get involved.

If you live in a community where a CREW is planned you will be asked to tell us your concerns and will be invited to join in, in any way you can. You might be able to set up a residents association or help in clean-ups.

What happens when the CREW is finished?

We will let you know what we have achieved during the CREW week. By telling you what we have done, we hope that you will want your neighbourhood to keep on improving. Neighbourhood Watch and other community activities will be organised to help you carry on the good work.

We will give you proof that the crime in the area is less and you will be able to see ‘before and after’ pictures of the work that has been done to make your area a nicer place to live. You will find that the local people who have experienced a CREW are the biggest supporters. They are benefiting first hand. You can read what they have to say below.

“We want to build on this work to bring an end to the criminality…that has plagued this area” (local resident).

“Thank you for visiting and actively dealing with the problem of anti-social behaviour” (local resident).

“Thank you for the many noticeable improvements in the appearance of the local community” (local church).
