Seniors Council

The Seniors Council is an independent body supported by Age Concern Southampton and the Later years partnership. It seeks to work with other older persons groups and organisations in the city. The Seniors Council is made up of:

  • Three members from each of the five local Neighbourhood areas of the city
  • Two ethnic minority members
  • A representative from the Pensioners' forum
  • A representative of Age Concern
  • The city council’s Older persons champion
  • People that it chooses to co-opt.

Everyone on the Seniors Council is over 60 and lives in Southampton. Its make-up ensures it reflects the diversity of Southampton’s population. It is accountable to the city’s senior citizens, so works in an open manner and provides feedback.

The Seniors Council is committed to improving quality of life and encouraging a healthy and dignified old age for seniors of all communities. It works to make the voices of seniors in Southampton heard, so those who make decisions and run services can take seniors’ needs and opinions into account.

The Seniors Council meets once a month, with additional meetings of smaller task groups to work on particular issues. As part of their work they have issued a statement on ageism, which you can read by clicking here.
