Burial and Grave Details
Bereavement services provides a search of Southampton City Council cemetery records and can give you details of where someone is buried in one of the five council cemeteries, Millbrook, Hollybrook, St Mary Extra, Southampton (old cemetery) and South Stoneham.
Graves - adverse weather
During frosty spells glass vases can shatter causing dangerous shards, water filled stone vases can freeze and split. Also the cement used to bind corner posts to kerbs can decay and admit water, which then freezes, forcing the memorial apart.
Graves - access and rights
Cemeteries are places where the burials take place continually either in new or reopened graves. Please note that in the future, perhaps in a few weeks, or many years, a grave next to yours will need to be dug.
Graves - animal damage
The subject of dogs in cemeteries raises strong feelings. Complaints are regularly received about dogs being allowed to foul graves, with demands that they be banned. Others say that they will take their dog with them whatever anybody says.
Graves - maintenance
Even after the fees received for the burials and memorials, the cost to the City's Council Tax payers of running the cemeteries is around £400,000. This is because the cemetery maintenance is very expensive in terms of staff and equipment (as compared with for example large open areas such as playing fields and parks).
Exhuming a Deceased Body
Bereavement services can provides advice and names of exhuming specialists and grave opening services.
Transfer of Grave Rights
