The Registration Service, based at the Register Office, 6a Bugle Street is responsible for the civil registration of all births, stillbirths, deaths, marriages and civil partnerships taking place within the City of Southampton.
How do I obtain a replacement certificate?
The original registers containing all birth, death and marriage entries are kept at the Register Office in the district where the event occurred and certificates can be issued from them upon payment of a fee. At Southampton Register Office y ou can apply by post, in person or by phone (in most cases). If you are unsure of the date of the event a five year search will be made. If the record still cannot be found your fee will be refunded.

I am adopted, can I apply for a copy of my birth certificate?
If you have been adopted you can apply for a certificate of adoption which is the equivalent of a normal birth certificate but in your adopted name. These are only available from the General Register Office, Southport.
I married in a church - can I get a replacement marriage certificate from the register office?
The registers used at the church are handed in to the local Register Office once they are completed. Sometimes this can take many years, depending on how many marriages take place at the church.

You will need to contact the Register Office responsible for the area in which the event occurred. If you are unsure where the event took place you can contact the General Register Office that holds all the records for the country concerned.
