Community development workers

Community development workers work with individuals and community groups to enable them to become more involved in their local area. Groups such as residents groups, environmental groups or social enterprises can be formed to help them make a difference in their local area. Further details of our service include:

• We help set up new groups and support existing ones. With new groups we may help you adopt a constitution (set of rules), open a bank account and find funding.

• If appropriate we look at your training needs and organise training which will build upon your skills enabling you to manage your group more effectively and in turn improve your personal development.

• Existing groups are supported by our attendance at committee meetings, where we share information and signpost to other Council departments and other agencies.

• We support the committees who manage Southampton City Council owned Community Centres and give them information and advice to ensure the centre is run efficiently for the benefit of the community.

• We work with other partners such as the Police, Youth Service and Primary Care Trust allowing us to share information and to jointly resolve issues.

• We work with local communities to help foster a dialogue with service providers so your voice can be heard regarding issues affecting your area.
