Report a vehicle that you believe has been abandoned to the council so we can investigate and remove it if appropriate. An untaxed vehicle may not be an indication of abandonment. We will inspect the vehicle and make an assessment of the risk.

Untaxed vehicles

From 1 October 2014 you no longer need to display the paper tax disc on a vehicle windscreen.
You can check the tax status of any vehicle through the DVLA vehicle enquiry service.
Untaxed vehicles can be reported directly to the DVLA on the Department for Transport website.

Abandoned vehicles

Generally a vehicle would need to be at least 1 month out of tax and in the same location for 8 weeks, however the investigating council officer will look at all the individual circumstances in reaching a decision.

Report an abandoned vehicle

You will need to provide

  • the road name and location of the vehicle
  • the registration number
  • your contact details (The DVLA require us to be able to identify the person making a report of an abandoned vehicle as a condition of making enquiries on their database)

We would aim to remove a hazardous vehicle within 24 hours of being notified. We may not be able to remove all other vehicles immediately, however we will aim to investigate within 48 hours of being notified.

We cannot tell you the outcome of our investigations or who owns the vehicle. We may not be able to remove every vehicle which has been reported as abandoned.
