Connected Southampton - Transport Strategy 2040 (draft LTP4 strategy)

Connected Southampton - Transport Strategy 2040 is the name for a new draft transport strategy for the city. This draft strategy, which is out to public consultation from Wednesday 25 July to Tuesday 16 October, sets out a long term vision for improving the transport network in Southampton over the next twenty years.

The strategy forms part of the fourth Local Transport Plan for the city and proposes to deliver around 75 different transport projects that will contribute towards making Southampton a more successful, healthy, modern, sustainable and inclusive city. This will support the transformation of the city, setting out what transport success will look like for all different types of travel in 2040.

You can read the draft transport strategy by downloading it below.

The draft strategy proposes a number of ideas and proposals for improving transport in Southampton. Seven major proposals are to:

  • Develop mass rapid transit for Southampton and the wider area that transforms the public transport experience

  • Create a liveable city centre where it is easy for people to walk and cycle around in a world-class environment well-served by public transport

  • Develop a network of active travel zones in local neighbourhoods, that encourage people to adopt new ways of getting around for local journeys where a range of alternative mobility options are available, people are enabled to make more local trips by walking and cycling, supported by measures that discourage through traffic

  • Complete a comprehensive cycle network for Southampton that enables people to cycle safely from their front door to where they want to go making Southampton a true cycling city

  • Establish a network of park and ride sites that serve Southampton and large employers – both on the edge of the city and at local points that can be used by people going to work and coming into the city for leisure

  • Support growth and the smooth operation of the main employment areas in Southampton, such as the port and the main hospitals to ensure that they are served by efficient, modern and reliable transport connections within and beyond the city

  • Work towards a zero emission city which improves air quality beyond legal limits so that Southampton is a clean and healthy city where people want to live, work and visit

It's now time to have your say on these proposals and on the other proposed projects.
