Green Waste FAQs

1. How many bags can I have?

Each household can have up to two free bags. Additional bags can be purchased for a one-off fee of £20 per additional bag. To order free bags, or to buy additional bags contact Actionline on 023 8083 3005.

Please note if you choose to pay by credit card then a 2.5% surcharge will be added to the transaction.

If you place more than two bags out, and have not purchased additional bags, they will be removed by the council.

2. How do I get replacement bags?

Replacement bags can only be ordered through Actionline, please contact them on 023 8083 3005 where staff will order replacements for you.

3. How will I know when to put my garden waste out for collection?

Please refer to your annual waste collection calendar for your collection dates. Or enter your postcode in the search field below these FAQs.

4. Where should I leave my bags for collection?

Your bags should be placed at the edge of your property by 6.30am on the collection day only, please ensure your bags don't obstruct the highway.

5. How big are the bags?

The dimensions of the bag are:

Height: 55 centimetres.
Width: 49 centimetres.
Depth: 46 centimetres.

Each bag can hold approximately 120 litres.

6. Can I put my bags out on the collection day at any time?

Please ensure your bags are out by 6.30am on the day of collection.

7. I am elderly and / or disabled, and cannot carry my bags to the boundary of my property.

If you require extra assistance with the collection of your household rubbish, recyclables or green waste, please contact Actionline. You will then be contacted by a member of the waste management team to determine your eligibility for assisted collections.

8. What happens if I have garden waste to dispose of outside the collection schedule?

Excess garden waste can be taken to Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) at Endle St, Grange Rd, Netley or Normandy Way, Marchwood (see the map below for their locations). Alternatively, please consider home composting as an alternative method.

9. How much garden waste can I put out?

You can only put out green waste in bags supplied by the council, if additional waste is placed out it will not be collected.

10. Does it matter how heavy my bag is?

Please ensure your bags aren't overloaded, they need to be light enough for one person to lift. If your bags are too heavy they may not be emptied and you will have to lighten them before the next collection.

11. How does the council know I have paid for a bag?

Any bags purchased are currently delivered with a yellow tag attached to the handle. Please ensure the tag remains on the bag so we know that the bag has been paid for.

12. I don't have a bag, how do I get one?

Please contact Actionline on 023 8083 3005 where staff will order your bag for you.

13. Can I ask the collection crew for a bag?

No, all bags must be ordered through Actionline, this ensures our records are accurate.

14. I live in a flat, but have a garden, can I join the service?

Residents who live in flats can join the service following an assessment of their requirements. Please contact Actionline. You will then be contacted by a member of the waste management team to discuss your requirements.

15. How will I know what to put in my bags?

16. What happens to my bags when they have been emptied?

Once emptied, your bags will be returned to your property. The crew will try to secure the bags. If possible leave a large stone or brick near your bags, and the crew will place this on top of your bags to stop them blowing away.

17. What happens to the green waste once it has been collected?

18. What happens if my collection falls on a Bank Holiday?

Please refer to your annual waste collection calendar. Revised collections due to Bank Holidays are printed in red.

19. I'm a commercial gardener/tree surgeon/landscape gardener, how should I dispose of green waste generated from my business?

The kerbside garden waste collection service is for residential gardens only. Commercial waste should not be placed in the bags. Please look in the yellow pages under commercial waste disposal for a licensed waste carrier, otherwise please contact the Environment Agency.
