Large items of waste - removal

Southampton City Council's chargeable bulky household collection service helps residents who have a problem disposing of large household items, which cannot be disposed of through the normal domestic waste collection service.

Southampton's City Patrol Team operates in the city and any offenders could face a £50 fixed penalty notice (maximum £2,500 in court).

The service is not available for house clearances.

Bulky Household Waste FAQs

1. How much does it cost?

The first two collections will be charged at £25 per collection for a maximum of five items on each occasion.

For further collections individual quotations will be required, with a minimum charge of 73.50 - in line with Southampton City Council's normal scale of charges for commercial waste collection.

Fridges and freezers cost £25 per collection for a maximum of two items on each occasion.

Concessions for people in receipt of benefits

People in receipt of benefits will receive a 50% reduction on the normal charge for the first collection only, subsequent collections are charged at the normal rate.

2. How do I pay?

You can pay by debit or credit card while you are on the telephone to Actionline on 023 8083 3005.

If you don't have a debit/credit card, we will give you a reference number and you can pay by cheque or cash at Gateway or your local housing office.

Note: collection will not be made until payment has been received.

3. What will happen on collection day?

  • Please make sure all the items listed for collection are clearly identifiable - no responsibility will be accepted for artlicles taken in error.
  • It is your responsibility to put your items in the agreed collection point by 7am. Any return visits will be classed as another collection and will be charged for.
  • Please ensure that your items are easily accessible and do not block walkways or access routes for others.
  • If your items are not out for collection on your designated collection day and cancellation has not been made within three working days prior to the collection date you will not be eligible for a refund.

4. What bulky waste isn't collected?

  • Clinical waste.

  • Hazardous waste.

  • Car parts.

  • Tyres.

  • Plasterboard.

  • Garden waste.

  • Rubble or building waste.
