In October 2010 construction work started on Southampton’s new City Depot and Recycling Park.
The state of the art facility will be the base for a number of key council services and home to the city’s new Recycling Park – due to open in December 2011.
The depot is being built on the west of the city at Dock Gate 20 by local construction firm Mansell. The location plan is available here - opens in new window. The construction is due to last approximately 44 weeks.
The construction will mean that the current Town Depot site at Endle Street (close to the Itchen Bridge) will close and eventually be sold for redevelopment.
Benefits
This exciting scheme will provide
A new larger Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in an excellent location
A sustainable development – the new site has efficient energy systems (e.g. LED lighting), photovoltaic cells (solar panels) on the main roofs, rainwater harvesting and water reclamation systems
A base for services to operate from for the next 50 years
4 new apprentice posts and during the construction the council will be giving industry training days for schools.
