Computer Recycling

Recycling computer equipment through Jamie's Computers

Jamie’s Computers is the social enterprise arm of The Society of St James, Southampton’s largest homelessness charity.
At Jamie's we offer a professional and secure IT disposal service to businesses and individuals. We refurbish donated computers and make them available for reuse whilst anything that cannot be reused is recycled.
Did you know?

An estimated 1.8 million tonnes of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is discarded every year in the UK. Around 270,000 tonnes of this is computer equipment, much of which is still working.

Jamie’s Computer helps prevent useable machines from entering waste streams and landfill sites. Studies show that reusing a computer is up to 20 times better for the environment than breaking it up and recycling it. Manufacturing new computers uses energy, fossil fuels and finite resources whereas prolonging the life of a computer is the best way to reduce the carbon footprint of IT.

Who can donate?

Anyone can bring their IT equipment to us FREE of charge and we can arrange collections from businesses.

Security

  • Data destruction is guaranteed using Blancco software which meets all recognised data destruction standards

  • Our service is compliant with the WEEE Directive, Data Protection Act and Duty of Care

  • We fully asset track all equipment through the process

  • We are a registered Hazardous Waste Carrier and provide consignment notes to businesses for the safe transportation of your waste, in line with government legislation.

  • We are registered with the Environment Agency as an Approved Treatment Facility for WEEE
    Community

Jamie’s Computers offers both environmental and social benefits. Through our IT disposal and refurbishment services, we are able to provide learning and voluntary opportunities to socially excluded adults within the community.

We also extend our help abroad by sending out refurbished PCs to be used in schools and hospitals in the developing world following a partnership with Computer Aid International.

Sales

At Jamie’s we also sell laptops and PCs which are tested and refurbished to a high standard by trained and qualified staff and made available for reuse. Prices start from around £100 or £70 if you are in receipt of benefits.
