Residual and Recycling Collections - Frequently Asked Questions

1. Where is the HWRC (Household Waste and Recycling Centre - tip)

The HWRC has now moved from Endle St to First Avenue, Millbrook, to find out more, this link tells you more about the new facility.

2. What time should my bins/sacks be out for collection?

Your waste should be out for collection by 6.30am. Even if the crew don't normally collect your refuse until later in the day, your waste should still be available for 6.30am in case we have to change the day's routing due to operational reasons.

3. How will I know which days to put my waste out?

Please refer to your annual waste collection calendar for your collection dates. If you don't have a calendar please contact Actionline on 023 8083 3005 or email actionline@southampton.gov.uk and one will be sent.

Alternatively, enter your street or post code into 'Where I live' at the top of the page to find out the date of your next collections'.

4. What happens to collections on Bank Holidays?

If your waste collection falls on a Bank Holiday, please refer to your annual waste collection calendar. Revised collection days are printed in red.

Revised collections for Christmas are printed in the local papers, and will also be displayed on this web site.

5. Can I store my bins/sacks on the highway all week?

No, only place your bins/sacks at the boundary of your property on your collection day. Leaving your bins/sacks on the highway all the time is an offence for which you can be fined £100. It also causes a hazard to pedestrians.

6. Where should I leave my bins/sacks on collection day?

Your bins/sacks should be at the boundary of your property. Please ensure that you do not obstruct the highway. The crew will not come onto your property to collect your waste unless you are on assisted collections.

7. I live in a shared house so who is responsible for the bins?

Everyone living in the house is responsible for the bins. This includes putting the correct waste in the bins, putting them out for collection and returning them back to your property after they have been emptied.

Failure to comply to the procedures could result in a £100 fine.

8. I am elderly and/or disabled, and cannot get my waste to the boundary of my property.

If you require assistance with the collection of your waste, please contact Actionline on 023 8083 3005 or email actionline@southampton.gov.uk. You will be contacted by a member of the waste management team to determine your eligibility for assisted collection.

9. I am on assisted collections, how do the crew know I am assisted?

If you are eligible for assisted collections you will be sent some yellow stickers, place these on your bins so that they are visible to the crew. The crew also carry lists of properties requiring assisted collections.

10. I currently have sacks and would like a bin, who do I contact?

11. I would like a larger/smaller/additional bin, who do I contact?

12. How do I get rid of extra rubbish or large rubbish?

Large rubbish can also be disposed of at the HWRC, or for a charge can be collected from your property bulky household collection service

13. I am on sacks, and have run out, how do I get some more?

Sacks are delivered twice a year in April and October. If you run out before the next delivery, please contact Actionline on 023 8083 3005 or email actionline@southampton.gov.uk.

14. My bin has been damaged/stolen/missing, how do I get a replacement?

Please contact Actionline on 023 8083 3005 or email actionline@southampton.gov.uk where staff will order a replacement.

Southampton City Council works with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance Charity, so you can recycle what you don't wear/use in the bright yellow collection banks.

18. My waste hasn't been collected, what should I do?

If your bins/sacks were at the boundary of your property by 6.30am and there was no problem with obstructions, access or contamination please contact Actionline on 023 8083 3005 and we will arrange for your waste to be collected.

19. Do my bins/sack need to be a certain weight?

Please ensure your bins/sacks are easy enough for one person to move. If the bins/sacks are too heavy they won't be collected, it is the householder's responsibility to lighten them before your next collection.

20. Can I put green waste in my bins/sacks?

No, the city's waste collection teams are not able to take green garden waste in the weekly or fortnightly domestic bin collections. The council operates a chargeable garden waste collection service Learn about the city's green waste collection service here.
