Students - How You Can Help

Information For Students

For many of you it will be the first time you have lived away from home or outside halls of residence and the first time you will be responsible for dealing with your own waste.

Southampton City Council wants to help you get to grips with responsibilities you now have as a resident of Southampton.

As a tenant you, and not the landlord, are responsible for making sure all your household waste is disposed of properly and legally.

Everyone living in the house is responsible for the bins. This includes putting the correct waste in the bins, putting them out for collection and returning them back to your property after they have been emptied.

If you are living in the Portswood or Polygon areas of the City then use the following link to see your Waste collection calendar.

If bins are repeatedly left on the street you could be issued with a £100 fine. It is also important you look after your front garden and not let litter build up as this could also result in a fine.

Please remember to be a good neighbour by keeping your street and garden clean and tidy.

Why don't you become an Enviro Champ?

Are you interested in looking after your local environment? Do you want to make a difference? Are you prepared to get stuck in and pick up litter, remove graffiti, provide information and support to students about how to recycle and manage their waste?

It's a chance to get involved, meet other volunteers and get some experience for your CV.

Waste and Recycling Collections

You should have two wheeled bins with different coloured lids at your property. A green lidded bin for general waste and a blue lidded bin for recyclable waste. The following FAQs should answer any questions you have over their use.
