Eastpoint Centre - College application

Planning application 09/00344/OUT
Eastpoint Centre, Bugoyne Road, Thornhill SO19 6PB

Re-development of the site to provide a new college facility (Use Class D1). floodlit all weather sports pitch, two floodlit multi-use games areas, nursery, outdoor training area, access arrangements including new vehicular access from Bursledon Road, associated parking and landscaping, following demolition of the existing buildings. (Outline application seeking approval for access, layout and landscaping - maximum floor space - 16,700 square metres).

Itchen College is currently based at Middle Road, Bitterne. It is one of two such colleges within the City of Southampton administrative boundary, the other being Tauntons College, located North West of Itchen College. At present Itchen College serves a catchment area which covers the east side of Southampton and the adjacent parts of the Boroughs of Eastleigh and Fareham. Approximately 72.5% of the student body lives within a 5km radius of the College.

The proposed development will involve a phased demolition of the existing buildings associated with the Eastpoint Centre and development of the new College facility, with associated access road.

An additional application is being submitted for the replacement of the existing Eastpoint Centre that includes the redevelopment and construction of new buildings on a separate part of the site.

An area of the existing woodland will be retained in the eastern portion of the site, and re-enforced. A new nursery building, 2 multi-use games areas and car parking associated with the College will be located in the northwest portion of the site. The project will be completed through the construction of an all weather sports pitch between the new boundary of the woodland and the new College building. The proposed development will utilise the existing access/egress taken from Burgoyne Road, but also provide an internal link road through the site from a new point of access (only) from Bursledon Road.
