Planning Policy

Welcome to our planning policy pages.

The main role of the planning policy team is to produce the statutory planning documents that guide the future development and use of land in Southampton. The aim of these documents is to deliver high quality development in the right place at the right time while meeting the needs of residents and businesses. In these plans the council will balance the economic need for development against environmental and social considerations such as promoting a low carbon approach, protecting important historic and environmental areas and ensuring that relevant social and physical infrastructure is provided.

Preparation of the plans is an ongoing process with new documents being drafted, consulted upon and published on a continuing basis.
