Submit an application online or by post

Online

You can apply for planning permission via the planning portal, which is an online service available to all councils. This makes it cheaper as there is less postage and printing involved and much quicker as there is immediate delivery and acknowledgement. The Planning Portal website also allows secure online card payment. Click the Planning Portal logo on the left hand menu or the 'Key online service' link above.

By Post

Alternatively, you can submit an application in the post by selecting the relevant 'downloadable forms' from a list of application types. These can also be obtained from Gateway, located in One Guildhall Square opposite the Civic Centre more information can be found here or by telephoning the Planning Services office on 023 8083 2603 between the hours of 8.30am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. Please complete them before sending them by post, with the relevant documents and fee to the planning office using the contact details at the bottom of the page.

Location maps

With every application we need location plans that show the application site clearly. These maps are available online from our mapping page

Assistance required?

If you need help in completing the forms, a planning technician or duty officer is available during office hours to help you fill in the forms and check that the application is complete. If you require an appointment you can telephone the Gateway Offices. The number for appointments is 023 8083 2603. Alternatively you can e-mail using the following address: gateway@southampton.gov.uk and they will confirm this appointment within 1 working day.

Pre-application advice

We encourage all applicants to seek pre-application advice to identify any potential issues prior to formal submission. Further information on the pre-application advice service can be found on the 'pre-application advice' page (link to the left) If you decide to employ someone to act as your agent to deal with your application, all correspondence regarding the application will be sent to them. However, there is no legal requirement for an agent, it is simply a personal choice.

Asking for other advice

Other advice is available in our 'planning advice' section on the left hand menu and answers questions about whether you need permission for building a conservatory or extension all the way up to what you need to do if you want to build an office block.
