Travel surveys

The first step in the process is to carry out staff and pupil travel surveys. These examine the forms of transport used by pupils and staff for the journey to and from school, routes taken and issues with these routes, providing a sound base for action. Full consultation is recommended and can extend to surveying local residents, youth groups, extended school users such as community group users, nurseries attached to schools, visitors and site users. Taxi drivers and School Crossing Patrols have also been questioned about their travel habits and concerns.

Resources

Resources available from the School Travel Plan Officer to help with development of the STP include:

  • School Travel: Strategies and plans (DETR 1999)

  • A Safer Journey to School (DETR / DFEE 1999)
