Work place/STP business links

In 2007, Southampton City Council launched a unique initiative to bring schools and businesses together through their travel plans.

The aims of both Workplace and School Travel Plans have strong similarities. With this is mind, Southampton City Council's initiative forges a link between local businesses and schools for them to share initiatives and resources. By uniting businesses with schools it is hoped that a robust sustainable travel attitude will emerge with whole families.

The scheme was officially launched in March 2007 with pupils from Oakland's Community School visiting Ordnance Survey for a travel planning day. During their time at Ordnance Survey, the pupils:

• carried out map plotting exercises to examine car sharing options.

  • redesigned their school car park to allow for prime location car share only parking spaces as seen at Ordnance Survey

  • chose a design and location for secure storage on the school site, considering issues such as cost, surveillance, accessibility and demand.

  • were invited to experience a ride in the Ordnance Survey's electric car, including viewing the mechanics of the vehicle.

We hope to expand this scheme in 2009. Contact us for further details.
