Please be aware that due to ongoing building works in the Civic Centre there will be significant changes to access to Archives collections with effect from 28th March 2011 to December 2011.
The Archives Reading Room remains open throughout, but access to around 50% of the collections in the strongrooms will be restricted until the end of the project.
Access to many of the most frequently requested sources will remain as normal (including Church of England parish registers, non-conformist registers, crew lists 1863-1913, the Central Index Register of Merchant Seamen 1918-1941, workhouse admission registers, Building Inspectors' registers and plans, Council and Committee minutes and agendas). A fuller list of collections unaffected by the change is available.
From 7th June until December 2011 items not included in the above list will need to be ordered up by 4pm on the Thursday before the week of your planned visit. Document orders can by made by telephone (023 8083 2251 Tues, Weds, Thurs 10-4) or by email (city.archives@southampton.gov.uk - please put 'Document Order' in the subject line, and the reference of the item in the body of the email).
Please be advised that these dates may be subject to change, so check with Archives Office during opening hours before your visit.
