A beginner’s guide to Roman pottery
Saturday 21 July/ Sea City/ 10-3pm / £20
Pottery is the most common archaeological find from the Roman period. We will look at how archaeologists use pottery for dating sites and reconstructing life in the past. Then using the archaeological material from the Bitterne Manor site (Clausentum) and binocular microscopes you will be introduced to locally made pots from Hampshire and the New Forest Area, together with wares from further afield such as France, Germany, Spain and North Africa.
Dr Andy Russel works in the council’s Archaeology Unit. He studied at Lancaster and Southampton Universities, and has spent nearly 40 years in archaeology, working from East Africa to the Orkneys. His favourite tool is the microscope and he’s fascinated with what things are made of and what they can tell us about the past.
