The Guildhall Square has had a dramatic transformation that stretches from the Guildhall entrance, all the way to the old Tyrrell & Green site, linking through to the city's parks.
This contemporary space features many striking design features, making it the perfect meeting place and setting for performing arts shows, exhibitions and an array of exciting seasonal events.
The square is at the very heart of the city’s Cultural Quarter and is a new focus for Northern Above Bar. It will also make a major contribution to the redevelopment of the former Tyrrell & Green department store and the new One Guildhall Square building, home to the City Council’s offices and contact centre. Southampton City Council is working to attract over £75m investment to assist in the regeneration and development of this area.
Many events have already taken place on the square, including the launch event in November 2010 which saw 14,000 people attend over two nights. In July 2011, Barricade, No Fit State Theatre Company, staged a dramatic outdoor stage show on the Tyrrell and Green site (pictured above). Both events were in partnership with the council and The Nuffield Theatre. Since then, an huge variety of events have taken place including those run by Southampton Solent University, and those by City Eye for Southampton Film Week in October 2012.
Southampton Cultural Development Trust is spearheading the city's drive to complete the Cultural Quarter, with its new galleries, performance and film spaces, through fundraising and advocacy. www.culturesouthampton.org.uk.
