1. The Parades

Titanic Day 2011 - Two children dressing upThe schools will select pupils to parade their banners through Southampton in April 2012 as part of two parades, featured on the BBC, commemorating the centenary of the maiden voyage of RMS Titanic.

The first parade is from the Titanic Engineers Memorial to the SeaCity Museum on the 10th April to coincide with the opening of the museum and the second is a procession from Kingsland Square to St Mary’s Church on Sunday 15th April before the centenary commemorative service.

It is important to note that these parades take place during Easter holidays and it is the school’s responsibility to select pupils to participate and organise transportation to the parades.

2. The project in your school

The Titanic leaving Southampton being pulled by a tug boatInterested schools will be sent a project pack ready for the start of the new academic year. This pack will include names, job titles and a brief description of your allocated crew members to get you started on your research. It will also supply templates, ideas and examples to inspire and guide you in your work. There are six boxes which feature on the back of the hand-held banners. Classes are required to present their research creatively within these six boxes.

It is up to you how you want to organise the project in terms of the number of classes involved in this project. It is likely that each school will be given at least 2 crew members to research. You will have from September until 1st December 2011 to complete your research and produce your final work, ready for the production of the banners.

3. Need inspiration?

Titanic Day - girl colouringWe can assist you in your research and if requested, provide education staff to visit your school to help lead the project (charges apply). You could also extend the project beyond the classroom with a visit to the city library or archives to aid your research.
