We're looking for volunteers. Local people like you with free time to give to their local library
Southampton libraries are looking to recruit volunteers to deliver reading material to people in their own homes. This service is specifically for people who still enjoy reading but are unable to visit the library due to incapacity or ill health.
As a volunteer you will be paired with a housebound person who lives in your area. After introductions, you would need to visit the person monthly to collect and deliver their books.
One of the volunteers, Ezzie Kennedy says she really enjoys her volunteering role. She visits a lady in Central Southampton who has very definite reading tastes and 'loves writing me lists of authors and titles she wants me to order'.
Many people currently benefit from the service but Southampton libraries would like to offer it to more residents. This can only be done with the help of volunteers.
If you are able to spare two hours or more each month you can really make a difference. No experience is needed, but all volunteers must be over 18 years of age and will need to complete a Criminal Records Bureau check. We will help you with this.
Joining the Housebound Service
Are you housebound? Or do you know somebody who is?
Why not join the housebound service and have reading material delivered to your home once a month. You will be given a special card which the volunteer will use on your behalf.
If you are interested in either opportunity, please contact Suzanne Lancashire at Cobbett Road Library on 023 8083 3007
