Southampton Common

Image of Southampton Common
The Community Award winning Southampton Common is a much loved and well used green space and is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it is unique and requires specialist management to ensure that its status and biodiversity is maintained.

It is also home to Southampton's Old Cemetery and the Friends of Southampton Old Cemetery (FoSOC) hold many walks, talks and tasks where you can find out more about this historical site.

The Common is a great venue for events and the Hawthorns Wildlife Centre is open all year round to visitors. The Common is one of the UK’s most important wildlife sites and internationally listed as a site of excellence… So caring for it is one of the City Council’s most important jobs.

Paddling Pool on The Common

The paddling pool is open between 10am - 6pm every day until the end of the summer. However, the pool may close if the temperature drops or there is a likelihood of rain. This is checked on a day by day basis so if you are unsure if the pool will be open, please contact The Quays on the number below.

Active Nation, the charity who manage the paddling pool on behalf of the city council, hire portaloos when the pool is open. At all other times the nearest toilets can be found at The Hawthorns urban Wildlife Centre.

For more information about the paddling pool, please contact The Quays Swimming and Diving Complex on 023 8072 0900.

The temporary orienteering course on Southampton Common is a free outdoor activity for the whole family to enjoy. There are three courses. The short course, 0.76K, is easy. the other two are more challenging. All start from outside the Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre.

You can download a copy of the map here. Each control point has a red and white marker on it showing a number and a code letter, which you write in the numbered boxes at the side of the map.
