Apprenticeships combine work-based experience with training and generally last between one and four years.
They normally lead to a qualification, such as a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ); this is normally at Level 2 for Intermediate Apprenticeships, Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeships, Level 4 and 5 for Higher Apprenticeships or Levels 6 and 7 for Degree Apprenticeships.
Apprenticeships start at 16 years old, there is no upper age limit.
The government fully funds apprenticeship training costs for 16 to 18-year-olds and provides up to 50% training costs for 19 to 24-year-olds. It also contributes to training costs for people aged 25 years and over who meet certain criteria.
