Customer services partnership agreed by Southampton City Council

The council has over the past 3 years been developing and implementing plans for improved services. Councillors have today (July 18) agreed to a partnership with Capita to help achieve its aims.

This joint venture will bring £25m to the city in the first three years of the partnership and is set to transform and further improve the way customers receive services from the council.

Gateway, the current one stop shop, will be refurbished and over the next 3 years further service enhancements will take place, including the development of a regional business centre and call centre.

Capita will also deliver several behind the scenes council services, including human resources and payroll, IT, procurement, property management and the processing of council tax and benefit claims.

Councillor Jeremy Moulton, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “This is an excellent result for Southampton. It’s a good deal for the council's customers, its staff and the local taxpayer. By working with Capita the city council will benefit from millions of pounds of investment into customer services. We will also save the taxpayer millions of pounds over the term of the contract; money which can be put back into front line services.

“It’s good news too for council staff being transferred to Capita as they will gain from more career opportunities and will enjoy a more modern working environment.”

The council will formally sign the contract early in August. Work will then start to prepare 650 staff to transfer to Capita on October 1.
